Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at White River Health System in Batesville, Arkansas.
Our program offers traditional three year Categorical Internal Medicine Residency training. We are fully accredited by the ACGME. The main training site is White River Medical Center (WRMC), the flagship hospital of the White River Health System. WRMC is a 224 bed hospital that serves the surrounding nine medically-underserved counties.
Through our affiliation with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) the residents will gain experience and education at a tertiary care center in their second and third year.
During their training the residents will participate in research projects and are expected to participate in regional and national meetings.
Our goal is to graduate highly qualified internists who are ready to practice in any clinical setting or pursue further subspecialty training.
Batesville is a safe community situated on the banks of the White River. Home to two colleges, Lyon College and UACCB, Batesville takes pride in being the oldest existing city in Arkansas. Batesville has something for everyone including outdoor activities such as fishing and rock climbing, the arts and festivals, a thriving Main Street, and diversity in commerce. Small town charm makes Batesville a great place to call home with the big city attractions of Little Rock (90 miles), Jonesboro (70 miles) and Memphis (120 miles) just a short drive away.

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at White River Health System. Over the past two years WRHS has diligently worked to develop a high quality, innovative, and unique Graduate Medical Education program. The quality of our program is exhibited by the outstanding leadership and faculty; innovation is displayed through the robust affiliation with the College of Medicine and Regional Programs at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; and the uniqueness of our model and approach is demonstrated in the partnership of our strong community hospital with an academic medical center. In this regard, the ACGME has stated that no other Internal Medicine program such as WRHS exists, and they hope that it will be a model for new programs in other communities across the nation.
Why would a resident want to train at WRHS? It is simple: you can have the best of both worlds. A WRHS resident will train in a community and hospital that are vibrant and relational while still enjoying the benefits of training with a recognized academic medical center and its vast resources. In short, a WRHS resident can enjoy a friendly small town lifestyle and learning along with access to big city training. This approach is non-traditional, intentional, and beneficial. We believe that it offers residents all that they are looking for in learning and living.
Residents at WRHS, under the daily supervision of an outstanding faculty, will provide medical care to patients from diverse backgrounds. During the residency training period at WRHS each trainee will develop the skills necessary for diagnosing, providing care, and offering compassion to patients from a nine county service area.
The goal of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at WRHS is to provide excellent training in an exceptional place to live. Batesville has been repeatedly recognized as one of the most beautiful and top places to live. I can think of no better way, or place, for a resident to train than in a community that offers the best of both worlds every day!
